Default umask setting

I've just installed Ubuntui Linux 4.10 and it's looking really good. A
slight problme is that the umask is set to 022 by default, which allows
everyone to read newly created files by default.

I've changed the setting of umask to be 037 in /etc/logins.def and
in /etc/profile. I also found a setting in /root/.bashrc. But when I log
in to the Gnome desktop via gdm, the umask is still set to 022. I've
even rebooted but to no avail!

If I log in at the console, then umask is set correctly to 037.

Any ideas anybody?

All help and advice much appreciated.

Regards,
Tony.
