ubuntu is a gnome centric distribution, a lot of effort has been put in
the integration work of admin and system tools for gnome, note that
there never will be a official kde based cd image (you will have to
install ubuntu, remove gnome and install kde from the repositorys)
there are some community attempts to remaster a cd though (but i'm not
sure if anyone wants to build one with kde support)

this looks like a bad burned media, have you used the utility to check
the cd (it is in the bootmenu of the cd) ? it is pretty important that
you burn the image at the slowest speed you can.

the rpc server is needed for fam... because the devs are aware of the
scurity holes that could be caused by this, RPC only listens to requests
from the local machine, there is no way to access RPC from the net.
in fact ubuntu has not one open port to the outside world as long as you
dont enable a specific one.

you probably should look in the ML archives for kindered spirits to help
remastering the CD with KDE (even if you loose all the nice gnome
integration work then)
