nautilus doesn't allow transparent editing?

I noticed that if I use Nautilus to open a remote location like
ssh://remotehost/path/to/dir, it doesn't permit me to transparently edit
those files, like Emacs' tramp package does.
I don't suppose Nautilus has a hidden setting that intelligently
transfers files, permits local editing, and transfers back? Some kind of
network transparency?
I notice that gedit will handle the ssh:// url, but personally, I don't
think the app should have to.
