Dinda,
I'm glad you came to the list for a mentor as we're really excited to
get more approved teams setup across the US. There are many of us that
can mentor you, and anymore it seems that mentoring has become a team
effort with as busy as we all are. If you are available to join us in
#ubuntu-us on freenode we can do some more brainstorming with you there,
and we'd love to have the new face... so to speak.
The issue you've run into with the Texas Team vs Houston vs Dallas, etc
is something that is actually valid. The Ubuntu Community Manager--our
tie in to Canonical--does want us to create our teams on a state
organizational level. It's a similar structure to what is used overseas
for country-based teams. City based does make sense in many cases, and
we focus on that in those instances, but we do need to try and create a
state based umbrella so to speak.
Now I understand Texas is a *huge* state and it doesn't really make
sense to create one giant team to encompass everyone, and there are some
ideas on how to handle that. Again, we still need to work on creating
an official "Texas Team", but in your case I think we'll really focus on
the regional teams within the whole. I think one of the best ways to go
about it is to work with you on building the community in Houston, but
also make sure there are open and regular communications with Dallas and
other major regions.
Please let us know what resources you already have (irc, mailing list,
wiki, website, etc), or resources that you need and we'll help get the
ball rolling. Again, a great place for us all to brainstorm is in
#ubuntu-us on freenode. Stop by and we'll see if we can get things
figured out.
