That's a pretty broad question.  There's probably hundreds of articles 
on this if you do a google search - try something like "tips for 
switching to linux"

Obviously the safest way is to dual-boot if you have the hard disk 
space, or even buy a new hard drive and keep the old one - that way you 
can always go back if you really had to. 

Otherwise go for it and welcome to a new free and open source world.
