Just some random top-of-my-head suggestions...
Have you been dual-booting for a while? If not, keep a dual-boot
partition handy for emergencies (such as when a paper is due the next
day and you do something crazy).
As always, keep good backups. If something goes wrong it's nice to
know your data is safe, afterall, reinstalling is often easier than
fixing. :-)
Don't be afraid of the command line. In Ubuntu you don't really need
it, but sometimes it's easier to do things in a terminal than
graphically. Also, some tutorials for stuff you may want to use (3d
desktop graphic effects, wireless drivers) may require a bit of
command line copy and paste.
