First and foremost, I would recommend ubuntuguide.org to you, which is
full of step-by-step instructions on installing common applications
and setting up hardware. The full address (if you're using Edgy Eft)

For writing: OpenOffice is a great all-around solution, and there is
an application called Scribus, which is suited for professional,
desktop publishing.
