Learning Ubuntu

I have installed the Ubuntu disk on my aging Compaq desk top.It was
supposed to be dual operating systems and instead I goofed and ended up
with straight Ubuntu and have no idea of what I am doing.

Is there an on line operating manual I can download to guide me in even
the simplest of tasks? For instance, how do I install programs and
hardware, a modem and a word processor? I have begun to write in my old
age and depend on my computers for almost everything. I am anxious to
master the Ubuntu system at least well enough to use it for writing and
email. I am sick of Microsoft and its eternal ongoing rip offs. right
now I use Firefox and Thunderbird for my browser and email. I have fewer
problems with them.

Any help you can give me will be gratefully appreciated.
