Grub-install has to guess as to how the bios numbers devices.  I've
seen different BIOSes report usb drives differently, so grub-install
might get confused.  I'd suggest you make a dummy file named, say,
/media/usbdisk/THIS_IS_THE_PLACE.  Then boot from a grub floppy and
use 'find /THIS_IS_THE_PLACE' to have grub tell you where the usb
device appears.
