Ubuntu upgrade

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and am prompted to upgrade to the next LTS each
time I upgrade the 12.04 system.  I would like to do that.  Before I do
that I would like to create a CD that would allow me to come back to my
current system in the event the new system installation fails.

How do I prepare for recovery in the event of failure of the new
installation?
