Does the keyboard respond?  (When you hit num-lock does the light go on 
and off?)  If so, it is an input crash, not a system crash.  Next time, 
try hitting alt-F2 and see if you can bring up a command requester. You 
can run gnome-terminal from there and see what is happening.  A good 
place to start would be "top."
