Have you considered Wubi? Running a VM under Virtualbox or VMWare
server? Or even booting off the install CD, saving settings on the HD?

If your system can boot off USB, you should be fine.

WUBI will install inside your existing WinXP partition.

Virtualbox will allow you to run Ubuntu while also running WinXP.

The install CD will allow you access files on your HD, as will WUBI.
Virtualbox will not.

HTH,

Ken
