Google might be able to help with things like 'ubuntu hardware
compatibility' and all that entails... here's a start

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/

I think there were (are?) some current efforts (akgraner?) to get
ubuntu CDs onto some book shelf stores, with some success. I mention
it mostly because a source of CDs may be available to you already.

A 1GB thumb drive with migration instructions is a pretty interesting
idea, too. I can tell I already want one that has 'Drink Me' on the
side.
