[ubuntu-us-mn] Samba Share on Ubuntu12.10 Desktop

Penguins, 
I have a pc setup with Ubuntu 12.10 Desktop. 
Only using it as a server for now. That is no monitor, keyboard, mouse. 
Setup samba from terminal like I have on a number of other machines. 
Cannot connect to the shares, unless I go in to the gui and configure it that way. 
Also, not able to use VNC unless the machine is logged in. 
Any thoughts on what Is holding me back on the desktop version???
