A couple of months age there was some discussion on another list about
Ubuntu and run level control. I complained that run level 3 did give
just a text login like I thought it should. There were several
replies which, on closer examination, were not completely correct.
One of my findings was that you could select runlevel 3 at boot and the
system would still boot as it always did. *Even after you had completely
deleted the directory /etc/rc3.d!* I was gathering more such findings
for a more detailed post, and this got pushed to the back burner...

It seems that with Feisty Fawn Ubuntu has started to transition away
from the SysV init scheme to something called "initng". Ah! Something
new to learn. Sounds interesting. I wonder if I'll like it.
