Thank for your reply Martin. I am willing to post for the time being--I
can learn about sound and video as I try to examine whether the card is
the problem or a set-up option on my pc.

This string tells us there is an on-board sound device, and one on the
tuner (source device).

Output from arecord -l from console:

> card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC662 Analog [ALC662 Analog]
> Subdevices: 1/1
> Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
> card 1: CX8801 [Conexant CX8801], device 0: CX88 Digital [CX88
> Digital]
> Subdevices: 1/1

This is what my audio preferences look like in System>Preferences>Sound.

In Applications>Sound&Video>Volume Control

The little speaker was muted.

The full text of option 6 is: Capture: ALSA PCM on hw:1 (cx88 digital
via DMA (PulseAudio mixer)

I will check if this is a fix. MPlayer is causing me some trouble with
poor images after an install from the repositories. I then uninstalled
it to reinstall from source. Now I can't connect to the tuner at all.
I'm looking for a good "front-end" for TV using Mplayer.
