I recommend you take advantage of the ability of the Ubuntu Desktop CD
to run directly from the CD without effecting your windows setup.
This will give you a chance to "try it before you buy it".  You can
decide if Ubuntu is something you can use and make sure it supports
all of the devices you use with it.

I second the recommendation to backup your existing system when you
make the switch!
