If you've got a Garmin GPS, I believe the guy on TLLTS mentioned they
have some way of exporting the OSM data so it'll work with Garmin's
GPS stuff.
Unfortunately, *most* of the data here in the states is still less
accurate than, say, Google Maps. So it's still probably pragmatically
better to use the locked-down proprietary stuff, at least until we get
a more hoppin' OSM community here in the States. Some places aren't
bad, though, it looks like there's been some work done in downtown
Indy, f'r'instance. Washington D.C. seems also to have had some
editing love.
Over in England, apparently, the OSM stuff is very accurate and
high-quality (check out downtown London!). Of course, they have the
advantage of lower land area and a higher population density. And the
fact that OSM started over there.
Still, we're a lot better off starting from the U.S. Census data,
however less than totally accurate it is, than Venezuela, for
instance, where the only OSM data seems to be user-contributed content
in the Caracas area. My home city there has absolutely no data, and
it's a big city.
