Installing applications from outside the repositories

I know that going outside the repositories for binary files is not the
norm, but you also may want to try the getdeb.net site.

http://www.getdeb.net

Like freshmeat.net or kde-apps.org, it's a community site that has a
pretty good web interface for hunting down programs that may not be so
popular. More importantly in this case, for example, you can quickly
search for updated deb files that already meet your ubuntu machine
specs. Here's a quick comparison:

Gutsy (from the official repository): zim (0.19-1) [universe]
Gutsy (from getdeb.net): zim 0.21
Fiesty (from the official repository): zim (0.17-1) [universe]
Feisty (from getdeb.net): zim 0.20

I guess that I also should point out the disclaimer that appeared
after I changed my default search to Feisty...

"We no longer provide updates or new packages for the selected Ubuntu version !"

This may seem similar to hunting for Windows executables, but
hopefully it saves someone time in the long run.
