I meant this reply to go to the group earlier...

barry wrote back, saying that not giving money to MS was his goal. is that other's?

but i still think the benefits of linux is it's usefulness in reviving
older machines to run simpler, less problematic operating systems and
software. so

i'm kind of new to this ubuntu stuff... but what is the problem with buying a "nice" windows machine, then just setting it up to run ubuntu?

is it just not wanting to ever give microsoft any portion of your money through a computer purchase?

seems you can get the specs mentioned at the uber site for $500 on a XP/vista machine, then restart it with ubuntu. or getting something used with better hardware specs for even less.

am i missing something? maybe somebody can enlighten me? maybe i'm making "restarting with ubuntu" too simple? (i haven't done it yet myself)

also, i checked into some mainstream computer sellers to see if they had non-windows options. (sorry for shortness on details. i wrote a draft yesterday that got lost. gotta get off this hotmail/MS email program...)

Dell had a linux sort option on the laptop page - similar and/or slightly better price or specs. HP had a little fewer options, had to search for them. (only available on new Mini 10" laptops and maybe one desktop - similar pricing, though RAM and HD could be bigger with the linux???)

Gateway was unsupportive. Lenovo had some support documentation on compatibility.
