hibernate/suspend are (nearly) always tricky with Linux, and there are
even some reported Windows failures with Dell Dimension 4600i!!!

Not quite enough information.

1.which version of ubuntu?
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx with all the updates.
2. have you updated your packages?
3. It would be helpful to have the output from the following commands
to determine the specific peripherals involved. Run these in a command
window.
? ?lspci
Sorry I have reinstalled the OS again for the fourth time, so I don;t think it would be relevant.
? ?lsusb

4. Do you get any error messages when invokign suspend/hibernate.
No! it goes so far, don't know how far & locks/freezes & I restart from scratch OK.
My desk top is about six years old so maybe something is flaky?

Google reports some bugs with Dell Dimension 4600i and ubuntu, but I
can't tell whether they are applicable to your situation without more
data.
