On the topic of ads, OpenOffice already has a marketing effort complete with product brochures, etc.  I suspect, though I haven't checked, that Canonical has a similar initiative, with opportunities for volunteers.

If you're really intent on advertising in a paper, we should contact the local papers and ask about special rates for non-profits.  That's what the people who produced the other add did.  If we operate via OpenOffice's foundation (or some other associated non-profit) we might qualify.
