Sounds like an agenda item for the meeting: "Determining the best virtual
meeting technology."
While 2nd life is cool, the linux client for 2nd life is "alpha" and though
I'm no expert, I'm not aware of an ubuntu package for it - seems to be of
the compile-it-yourself variety. On top of that, unless there was
voice/audio support, 2nd life really wouldn't offer much that IRC doesn't
(except for the gee-whiz geek factor).

That said, there is a supported ubuntu package for Skype - which does a
great job of VOIP. Plus its cross platform :)

If nothing else, an attendee with a laptop with speakers and a nice
omnidirectional mic could run the skype client at the meeting - those that
can't make it can join in via a skype conference call.
