Yep, any app under any desktop. Just a few comments abount my way.
1. I always install from a Kubuntu disk (alternate, of course. Who
needs to wait for a freakin gui to start just to install) because I
prefer the kde login chooser and the color settings. The gnome chooser
(ick! IMHO) forces you to enter the login id, enter, then enter the
password, enter. The KDE chooser allows you to enter login id and
password on the same panel.

2. Next I install xubuntu desktop since I prefer the simplicity of
XFCE4. I don't need 99% of the stuff provided by KDE/GNOME. On my
low-memory laptop this is critical, but I prefer the simplicity of
xubuntu even on my barn-burning desktop.

3. Usually I install GNOME as well. Only one problem here. I use
mplayer plus all codecs and other evil features under Firefox.
Installing GNOME (and most updates) causes Firefox to prefer the
cr***y totem plugins over mplayer. Since I have never seen totem
actually work, I just whack all the totem plugin links so that I can
continue to use mplayer. Usually I forget to do this after an update,
and then I say Oh S**t! when I open a movie trailer and the broken
totem responds.

4. Any of the KDE/GNOME applications run just fine under xubuntu-desktop.

Enjoy.
