Kevin says backupPC is great (which uses rsync), but I haven't used it yet.
I've been using the basic rsync for a while now and really like it. Rsync +
Cron = a fast, easy and very effective backup.
I always rsync my home directory before I wipe out an install, the only
problem is that if you copy your home folder, when you go to restore it all
of your hidden files will be there as well, which you may not want. Of
course, you can always exclude hidden files from the restore:
--exclude=".*/"
