True. But before we explore options, I think we need to define the
problem and then look for an option that addresses the problem. So
far, I haven't seen a description of the problem we're looking to
solve. I suspect, however, that it's the "problem" of too much mail.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think some would prefer a trimmed down
list that is "on-topic". However, how do we decide what's on topic? Is
a message about an upcoming geek session on topic? Seems like it would
be for those interested but off topic if you live far away or don't
like socializing. What about a message about a Dell-Canonical
announcement? It has nothing to do with Colorado but certainly relates
to Ubuntu. Is general Linux news off-topic? I think we can go on and
on and everyone will have a different definition of what's on or off
topic. I don't think I've seen very many messages that are 100% on or
off topic. Everything is more a shade of grey.

I'm not sure more lists is the answer. Certainly, if you want to avoid
everything that is posted as off-topic then you could simply avoid
signing up for that list. But I suspect most of us would subscribe to
both and that is increasing clutter not decreasing.
Personally, I don't see a problem (maybe 'cause I'm part of it). But
maybe that's because I have figured out a solution to manage my mail
in a way that works for me. I am using my ubuntu-rocks account for all
things ubuntu related. I get around 200 messages a day between coloco
mail and launchpad. I have set up filters to tag messages and by
screening subject headings I can quickly find messages I'm interested
in and quickly delete the rest. All members can get an ubuntu-rocks
account. It's based on Gmail and has wonderful tools for managing
mail. This thread, for example, has 20 or so responses yet I only see
one message in my inbox. When I used my work address I would have 20
separate messages. I don't think the solution is to set up more lists
or ask people to make a decision about what others are interested in.
I think the solution is for each person wanting to subscribe to the
list to find a method of managing their mail that works for them. Use
technology to solve the problem as you see it in a way that you want.
If you want to tune me out, set up a filter to automatically move all
my messages to the trash.
I think the only guideline we need is that we post things that are
somehow related to either team activities or events or to Ubuntu.
Anyway, my $0.02.
Merry Chrismakwanzaka to all.
