Before you do any of that you need to make sure /var/cashe/apt/archive/ is empty of all *.deb so that you redownload all the packages.

Another command that fixes broken packages that you might try first is:
sudo apt-get -f install

Finally, in my e-mail I got the commands WRONG. They should be:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude reinstall ubuntu-desktop

So, to sum up. I'd recommend these:
1. Update your software sources so you get the latest fixes:
sudo aptitude update
2. Check and fix broken packages with:
sudo apt-get -f install
3. Check X (choosing defaults):
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
4. Try to reinstall the desktop:
sudo aptitude reinstall ubuntu-desktop
