[Ubuntu Chicago] jaunty upgrade broke my laptop :(

I had no issues , have been running it for a few weeks now.  I went the
standard way though and just ran "update-manager -d"  and let it do all the
fun.

Have you tried not using uuids but devices instead?  (edit /etc/fstab and/or
/boot/grub/menu.lst)
