I'd first make sure that they're running Gutsy, as it has the better
wireless support compared to all prior versions of Ubuntu. I was able to
connect to the "wisecounsel" AP, but it was unprotected.
If the student can connect to the unprotected AP, but not the protected AP,
then it's a matter of looking at what type of wireless security is being
used on the router side, and (on the student side) what kind of wireless
card they have, and how they're attempting to connect to the AP.
I admit that even the latter part isn't always so easy using Gnome's network
manager (nm-applet).
