[quote]
"One of the most well known cities in the United States, Chicago prides itself
on finding a better way to do things—from strengthening public education to
inventing Cracker Jacks, lowering crime to building the first skyscraper.
Leading Chicago since 1989, Mayor Richard Daley has built on the city's
desire for improvement, and has recognized the importance of technology in
driving those improvements. Daley has sponsored such programs as the
Technology Development Initiative to attract high-tech businesses and the
Mayor's Council of Technology Advisers. In fact, Daley remarked at the 2003
Digital Frontier Conference that "the City of Chicago is applying technology
to every area of the city government, from crime-fighting to graffiti
removal."

Strengthening public education, now that is a joke! Inventing Cracker Jacks,
was it that damn hard to come up with something cool about Chicago that they
used Cracker Jacks to describe us? Lowering crime, where in the streets or in
the government? Building the first skyscraper, I hate when people use
Wikipedia for information! I just finished reading the history of
architecture, and sadly the builder of the "Home Insurance Building" in
Chicago called it a skyscraper only because the walls didn't carry the load,
and was the first building of its size to do so. However, you can look at
timelines of the worlds tallest buildings and this one was never in it. As a
matter of fact, there were near a 100 cathedrals that were actually taller.
Architects will tell you the first true skyscraper was the Singer building in
NYC of all places. Oh well, lets move on and dissect this quote even more.
Ahh, the TDI (tech dev initiative), if any of you have worked in Chicago in
an IT field and the company was a part of this, you will see that the funding
of this said initiative was by....Microsoft! Oh, and Bill and Melinda Gates
sent a shit load of cash for Chicago Public schools, where did that go?
Applying technology in every area...from crime-fighting to graffiti. Holy
shit, graffiti? I guess the 12 gage the cop is holding while the
inmates/community service flunkies scrub the wall is considered technology.
Crime-fighting is the good one though, seeing as the Cook Country Sheriffs
department has more porn, spyware, and viruses on their computers then one
could ever imagine.
None the less, it is cool to see Linux in Chicago. If only it would fix the
dead people from voting!
