This doesn't have anything to do with Linux, but it does seem to be a
Java-related problem.  I recommend installing the Sun Java packages
through Ubuntu Software Center.  The HP JetDirect Java applet must not
be compatible with the icedtea Java runtime environment you have
installed.

Also, do check to see if there is any firmware update available for the
JetDirect card, as this may have been resolved by HP.
