Just to get to an authoritative source on this issue -- quoting 
http://www.ubuntu.com/aboutus/faq/ :

   Ubuntu, **an African word from Zulu and Xhosa**

That FAQ page also cites both Wikipedia and an academic paper as a good 
description of the Ubuntu concept...

...and both of those claim that it's a Zulu word, and make no mention of 
Xhosa.
