Well on the 8.04 issue the penny has dropped with a resounding 'doh' sound -
I've forgotten to rerun my ufw scripts to enable access via IPv6!! So yes it
was/is listening, but no traffic is getting that far. All configured, but not
restarted. One problem down, one to go :)
