I used to do that too, but at least there is some plus side to this
change as the text you type does not need to be at the start of the
file name, so if you have a file my_useless_file and you type useless
it will find it (and any other files with that text in the name.

I am much more concerned about the fact that the tree view and extra
pane have been removed.

I gather there are discussions ongoing about whether Ubuntu should
switch to a different file manager but it is complicated by the fact
that nautilus is not only the file manager but also manages the
desktop.
