Hi,
I have beeb reading your post regarding not beeb able to get any apps or
file bar on the screen, you might want to try the 2d unity options as i had
the same problem when i upgraded, after doing a bit of digging i found in
some cases the graphics card was not supports for 11.10 and that a download
of the 2d unitty was needed. Once i down loaded it i rebooted and at the
log in screen there is an option button, pressing that shows a list of
login types with the option for unity 2d. on selecting that and logging in
i found my apps showed again.

see link to Ubuntu weboage for unity

Let me know how you get on.

Kind Regards

Bob
