Good for you Barry.
I consider that this class of potential user of Ubuntu is only viable 
if someone (myself) is willing and able to completely accept 
responsibility for  the whole operation, including longer term 
support. I have a number of friends who I do this for. One is in France.
All I ask in return is that if they like Ubuntu (they are rapturous) 
they tell others about it.

Initial disc image and backup (HD may be flakey etc )
Partition and Install
update and configure
restricted codecs
ongoing support

The elephant in the room is what is installed at original computer 
purchase.  How to reach a destination or objective? From were we are 
now, or from where would have preferred to begin?
