We've just started using Likewise Open in work, and it works almost seamlessly.

You can log into a domain account (it gives you a different home
directory), you can access network shares without re-authenticating,
the computer joins the domain too.

I can join computers to the domain without admin rights, not sure if
that's what Paul M-R meant. Both the computer and my user account were
already on the AD domain from the Windows install.

With the version in the repo, I had to join my computer to the domain
twice (with a reboot in between) before I could successfully log in.
With the latest version 6.0 from the website, I only had to join the
domain once then reboot, then I could sign in (2 different machines,
in case you're wondering).

I haven't yet found out if there's a likewise command to change domain
password, but I think the smbpasswd command works without likewise
installed.

Neil.
