First thing I'd do is image it using something like clonezilla, onto a
USB or network attached disk.

Personally once the above step is done I'd wipe, install Ubuntu and
then install virtualbox, and clonezilla the backup of XP into a
virtual disk.

You can then cherry pick the bits you need out of the VM, and keep it
until you're happy you have everything.
