I've seen something like this with a couple of USB devices.  It turns 
out to be a module had loaded for the device and hence was tying up the 
device.  After unloading the module I was able to attach the device to 
the Virtual Box client.

Might be worth having a look to see if your printer loads any modules 
when it is turned on/attached and if so, try unloading these modules and 
then start Virtual Box.
