I haven't got one myself, but I do wonder, is the scanner powered via 
the USB port?  (which might explain why it won't work through a USB hub 
- well, maybe not through a non-powered USB hub).

Would it be possible to put the scanner in a USB port on the PC and have 
whatever else is connected to the PC into a USB hub? (I'd have guessed 
that you have at least 2 USB ports).  Otherwise, USB 2.0 PCI cards are 
fairly cheap.
