I have a similar thing, my Primary master is Windows 2000
my Secondary slave is Ubuntu 7.10 no problems.

I dont use the grub either, I dont need to.

Firstly I had 1 HD connected at the time when Installing Windows 2000.
Then connected the 2nd HD as secondary slave and Installed Ubuntu 7.10.

They both work well, with no problems.

Motherboard M848A Rev 2.1 dual boot.
