To Dave Restall
I have give as much information as I can with my limited knowledge of what I should be looking for, however here is the output of dmseg when it hangs(at the ubuntu startup screen)
below is the output from when I type dmesg in the terminal.......

To Rob Beard
Hi Rob, thank you for trying to help :¬) However I must tell you that after using the
feisty cd for about a month, I took the plunge and totally removed windows from my pc. I now have only ubuntu as my main OS ( though I do still use windows very infrequently, I use it as a virtual machine in VBox). so I dont have a dual boot system. The problem seems to be with the HPT366 driver, as my interface card is a HPT374 device. What is really getting to me is that the drive works perfectly when I boot on a Feisty Live DVD but it hangs my pc at the Ubuntu splash screen when I installed feisty to my hard drive. My pc will not go past that point at all if the drive is plugged into either ports 1 or 2 of the 4port sata interface card.
If I plug it into ports 3 or 4 then it goes to the login screen normally however, I cannot see the drive when I log in, neither can I mount it. To all intents and purposes, it does not exist. What is even more strange is that if I boot from a Gutsy Live CD I can see the drive but cannot access its contents. What has been done between the Fiesty DVD and the Gutsy CD to cause this.
At the moment the only way I can use the drive is to boot from the Fesity Live DvD where everything works fine and dandy, however that is not ideal.
I kinda feel cheated as everthing worked fine whilst I was using the Fiesty live Dvd
but as soon as I installed it to my hard drive I can no longer use one of my drives.
Moreover, it took me two weeks and the use of a pclinux live cd to find out why my brand new Feisty installation would not work. Not to mention only one or two hours sleep an night for a fortnight.
Kind Regard
