[ubuntu-uk] Donation of Old PCs

We do something along these lines at Infoseed in Edinburgh [1] though we
are very small. In our lab we have a dozen or so unwanted old computers
that we got for free mostly now running Ubuntu, providing facilities for
free Internet access and computing. We provided two computers to the forest
cafe [2] in the same way, they now provide free Internet access in the cafe
everyday running Ubuntu. And also for the Autonomous Centre [3].

I think we'd like to expand into doing more stuff along the line of Free
Geek [4], using our lab as a place for people to learn about computers and
software, build their own computers, computer recycling/reuse etc., all
using donated old hardware and free software. We're a little low on people
with lots of free time to contribute though, it has to be said.

By the way, if anyone is in or around Edinburgh and has a half-decent
laptop they could donate us, it would be much appreciated. We want to
provide the forest cafe with a custom Ubuntu-based jukebox on an old
laptop, they're going to mount it in the cafe as a listening station for
local and independent music. So far we've been unable to find a usable
laptop though, and if we don't get one soon they will buy an ipod instead.

Subject: [ubuntu-uk] Donation of Old PCs

Hi,

Has anyone looked into taking donations of old PCs, which businesses
throw out, and installing a form of Ubuntu on them. Then giving them
to schools, youth clubs etc who couldn't afford to buy them?

I know there are a few systems like this already but this is a great
way to get Ubuntu used more and more, and do a bit of charity work at
the same time!

This is also a great time to start talking about it as soon many
businesses will be upgrading systems for Vista.

Neil
