Hi Ian,

If you reach a stage where a command is failing, it's easiest to get
help if you can copy the command you typed in and any error messages
displayed (I'm assuming that the commands that are failing are being
entered in a Terminal window), then post them in an email to this list
or a new post/reply on the forum.
I realise at the moment that you might need to save it somewhere so
that you can connect to the internet under XP -- Applications >
Accessories > Text Editor is your friend here!
Select the text in the Terminal window, right-click and choose copy
(there are keyboard shortcuts, but this is easiest) -- you can also
scroll back if there's more than one screenful of errors (unlikely but
possible). Then save the text somewhere that you can access in XP.

Just saying that it's not working doesn't help us help you. Also, by
including the command you typed in, we can (hopefully!) see where the
problem might be and advise you accordingly.

And finally, this list is possibly not the best place to get help, but
we can always point you in the right direction if you post here. The
best place is probably ubuntuforums.org, or using Google/your
favourite search engine using the text of the error message you
received.

Last thought -- keep at it, there's a real sense of achievement when
you get things sorted out, and you quickly pick up a lot of knowledge
(although it's not always quick enough :-) ).

Cheers,
Neil.
