There is also the NX Client and Server from nomachine [1], I've use it
before to connect to my machine over the internet and it worked quite
well. It has encryption and compression so you get good speeds. I
haven't used it recently though, but it's worth a look. The server is
ran on the linux machine and you connect with the client from windows.
It uses SSH to authenticate so you'll need to set that up too.

If you go with the VNC approach as suggested by Caroline then the NX
client for windows can be used as a VMC client too.
