It can definitely be done and there are a number of different ways to
do it. The first is setting up and ssh server on the ubuntu
machine and using putty  on the windows side. This gets you a
If you want to run graphical apps on the ubuntu machine,
but displaying on the windows side then you can get an X-server for the
windows machine as part of cygwin  and then use the ssh within cygwin
with the -X option.
Another option is VNC  which can be used to get the desktop you see
when you log into ubuntu displaying on the windows machine.
These are in order of increasing bandwidth requirements.
