Thanks for your email Tez.  Yes, you are right, it does find the new
hardware.  I have poked around more and found the reason it wasn't
working as expected.

The /etc/iftab file had an entry for the previous PC's network
interface.  This pushed the new network interface in the new PC to be
eth1, and eth1 doesn't have any settings for DHCP.  I have deleted
that line (put in by the installer) and all works fine after a reboot.
 It has become eth0 and has a dhcp address.
