Would it be worth switching the focus from particular hardware (and how 
many people are really going to focus on serial numbers etc, rather than 
just brand name) to linux-friendly vendors?

Whenever I'm asked about linux-compatible wifi cards, something I'm not 
very knowledgable about, I always direct them to the linux emporium
(linuxemporium.co.uk)
because the service is good, and they know what they're talking about.
