+1 drupal. I've also (ab)used Mambo, and Drupal is by far the easiest of
the two to modify/hack for your own uses. Even installing modules and
themes is just a case of uploading to the appropriate directory on your
server. I'd recommend the php theme engine and the theme_editor module --
then you can edit/tweak the theme files through the web interface.
There's also a bunch of image gallery stuff I hear.
