As others have said, the Ubuntu way is to put the hammer down when you
are not using it by using sudo.  This makes perfect sense, and is the
prefered way of doing things.  Doing things to the root account is not
advised.

I had a hard time trying to get used to this way, as I have always had
a root account to hand.  I have been using Ubuntu on the desktop as my
main work PC since 6.06 came out, and I have got used to using sudo
instead of having a root account now.

For new starters, as it has already been said, it's best to follow the
way that the product was designed to work.  The advantages out weigh
use of the root account.
